Warrior Cowboy (feat. Josh Helms)

from Warrior Cowboy [Single] by Shane Michael Taylor

about

The night before my dad and I rode down to Nashville, I saw a news story about soldiers who had been severely wounded in combat and how they have to learn a new way of life being disabled, and it really struck a chord within me. I thought about how this is the only way of life that I have ever known since I've been this way from birth. I can't imagine what they go through having to adapt to the enormous challenges and experiences, and to think about how much they have sacrificed for our freedom, it made me stop and think. It really put things into perspective, and I knew that it was my duty to do something for them on this project. I also knew that I was going to be co-writing with a lot of amazing writers, so I brought this idea to two of my amazing writing buddies, KelleyAnn Hocter and Justin Zimmer and we wrote this song in a few hours. We knew we had something special. I think it's one of my favorite songs on this album.

I think this song sums up who I am the most. The bridge encapsulates my approach to life: "I don't need to kneel to say a prayer, to thank God that I'm still here." We all, in one way or another, fight for what we believe in and have "battle scars." No matter how wounded we get, we still have our spirit which can never be destroyed.

lyrics

VERSE 1:

I've weathered the driving rain, always riding against the grain

Got bucked off in a hurricane, jumped up and got back on again

I won't stay down for long

Don't need your prayers

I'm rugged, tough, and strong

CHORUS:

I'm a warrior cowboy, fightin' to stand my ground

I look the storm in the eye through the fury of the ragin' clouds

The dust never settles from my world crashing down

The spirit cannot be destroyed in a warrior cowboy

VERSE 2:

Been broken by the sands of time

put my whole life on the line

I paid the price for what I believe

took the fall for hopes and dreams

I'll rise above these battle scars

From a wounded soul and a shattered heart

REPEAT CHORUS

BRIDGE:

I don't need to kneel to say a prayer

To thank God that I'm still here

REPEAT CHORUS
